TUCKER HIGH SCHOOL 9TH GRADE ACADEMY

SUMMER BRIDGE PROGRAM

Remember your first days of high school? Were you intimidated by the older (and larger) students cramming the halls? Did you know how to find the classrooms you were to be in or even the lunchroom? Did the teachers move too fast for you to keep up with note taking? Did you even know what an agenda book was and how to use it?  Were you intimidated by test taking? Did you need help?

A new program is being implemented at Tucker High School this year Tucker High School 9th Grade Academy. This program will help incoming ninth graders with the transition from middle to high school by teaching them skills, tutorial services, touring the campus to familiarize them before the crowds descend in the fall, and teaching them to set goals for their high school years and how to reach those goals. The purpose of this program is to provide an environment conducive to developing lifelong learning and thinking skills, accountable, responsible behavior, developing social skills, and providing our newest high school students with the skills to meet the challenges of their rapidly changing world and to make a smooth transition from middle to high school.

The initial program for this summer will require funding in the neighborhood of $14,000.00 to help 300 students. It is called the Summer Bridge Program and is a spirited, high energy, and highly successful academic enrichment program. The summer program will provide student awards for academic progress, tutorials, a student portfolio which will teach students to express their learning goals and how to implement them and to identify their strengths and weaknesses. The culmination of the Summer Bridge Program will be a field trip to the Huntsville Space Center for all 300 students.
